Washington is home to the highest gas prices in the country. The state’s Cap and Trade auction set a price on carbon emissions, requiring energy companies to pay $300 million to the state in order to continue selling gasoline. Inslee said the cost passed on to consumers would be “pennies.”
Predictably, the cost is much higher – and we already have some of the highest gas taxes in the country at $0.494 cents per gallon. This extra fee has made prices skyrocket so high residents drive to neighboring states like Idaho just to fill up. And rather than help the environment, all this cap-and-trade system has done is raise prices on families dealing with an already-high cost of living.
