It’s not too late to fix police pursuit bill

It’s not too late to fix police pursuit bill

At midnight last night the Washington House of Representatives passed an extremely limited police pursuit bill that is so watered down as to be completely ineffective. The bill passed 57 to 40 with bipartisan support and bipartisan opposition – and representatives on both sides of the aisle should look in the mirror and ask if this is the best they could come up with.

This bill doesn’t even allow police to pursue stolen vehicles. We know from the tragic story of 12-year-old Immaculee Goldade that stolen vehicles can too easily become fatal. This law would not have saved Immaculee, but fixing the bill (with the original version that was introduced earlier in Session with bi-partisan support) could save future lives.

The bill now goes back to the Senate. Time is critical, so contact your Senator NOW and tell them to fix this bill.

CONTACT YOUR SENATOR AND DEMAND EITHER A FULL PURSUIT BILL OR A NO VOTE ON THE WATERED DOWN VERSION

There are only two acceptable paths forward from here:

✅ Fix this bill by restoring FULL police pursuit
✅ Ditch this bill and start over, putting public safety first

To the Senators reading – it’s not too late to do the right thing. Two years ago, a law was passed that made it impossible for police to pursue most criminals. Since then, innocent people have been killed and car thefts have skyrocketed in the state. And we found out it was all based on flawed data. Many legislators have spoken out publicly because they know this “fix” doesn’t go far enough. You have the ability to substitute the original bill and put victim rights over criminal rights or vote No on SB 5352. Do the right thing and pass the original bill, restoring vehicular pursuit and making Washington safer.

No more lives need to be lost due to this terrible legislation. Contact your SENATOR NOW AND TELL THE TO RESTORE THE FULL PURSUIT BILL OR VOTE NO ON THE WATERED DOWN VERSION and demand that they put safety first.
