Everett City Council Enhances Public Safety, Extends “No Sit, No Lie” Law

At last week’s public council meeting, the Everett City Council voted 5-2 to extend the current “no sit, no lie” law which would otherwise have been sunset at the end of 2025.

This law was enacted with major support from local business owners and residents as it enacted buffer zones to address loitering, homelessness, and associated criminal activity and instead focuses on connecting those in need with services.

The law was originally passed on a 5-1 vote in 2021. Since then, it has produced meaningful results within these buffer zones and has been popular with the local business community and the general public. When the ordinance was originally passed, it included a sunset clause, which meant that it would expire if a vote was not approved to extend the law into the future.

Future 42 has been advocating in favor of extending this law by encouraging Everett residents to contact their city leaders and make their voices heard.

Councilmembers Scott Bader, Judy Tuohy, Mary Fosse, Don Schwab, and Ben Zarlingo deserve our thanks for their vote to extend this important ordinance. Councilmembers Paula Rhyne and Liz Vogeli voted in opposition.
