AltaGas/ALA Energy Project: When Is Enough Review Enough?

Future 42 Whatcom County is sharing a recent op-ed from Cascadia on the AltaGas/ALA Energy Ferndale Terminal modernization project at Cherry Point, written by Seth Newsome of LiUNA Local 292 and Lance Calloway of Associated General Contractors of Washington. Lance also serves on the Future 42 Whatcom advisory committee.

The authors raise a key question: when is enough environmental review enough?

The Ferndale Terminal project has already gone through months of technical studies, expert consultation, and public input. Yet the County Hearing Examiner’s recent decision sends it back for more environmental review.

Their concern is that this is part of a bigger problem. Every delay threatens not only this project, but the overall economic stability and growth potential of our county. It is another signal “that Whatcom County is not open for business.”

Environmental protection matters. So does a fair, predictable process.
