Everett Takes Action: New Law Protects Kids from Fentanyl
At their most recent public meeting, the Everett City Council took unanimous action to approve a law which establishes a criminal penalty for those who expose children to fentanyl and other harmful substances. Those who violate the new law could face up to a year in jail.
This is in response to the tragic overdoses of over 30 children in Everett over the past several years. State legislators have failed to take action on this issue, with the majority rejecting efforts to criminalize the exposure of children to fentanyl during the recently adjourned legislative session.
The City of Everett’s leadership on this issue last Wednesday deserves recognition. When state leaders fail to act and protect the most vulnerable in our communities, it is imperative that local leaders step up to fill the void through proactive policy measures such as this ordinance.
Even if you’re not an Everett resident, it’s important to thank and recognize this an example all Snohomish County cities and municipalities to follow.
Thank the Everett City Council
Other cities should follow the course on this and introduce their own local laws. For non-Everett residents, we encourage you to contact your Mayor and City Councilmembers and urge them to pass similar legislation establishing criminal penalties for those who expose children to fentanyl.
