Let’s Go Washington Unveils Bold Initiatives: Parental Rights Restoration & Girls’ Sports Protection

Let’s Go Washington has unveiled two new initiatives  that strike at the heart of accountability in Olympia:

  • IL26-001: “Strengthen Communication Between Parents and Schools”
  • IL26-638: “Protecting Fairness in Girls’ Sports”

These proposals don’t come out of nowhere—they are the next step in a citizen movement that has already reshaped Washington politics through direct democracy.

In 2023-24, Let’s Go Washington drove the successful Parents’ Bill of Rights initiative, known as I-2081, which guaranteed parents access to student records, the right to review instructional materials, and the ability to opt children out of certain school activities. That initiative gathered enough signatures to go before lawmakers, and the legislature adopted it in full. But earlier this year , the same legislative leaders  reversed course. With House Bill 1296, they gutted or weakened key parental rights that families had just secured. For many parents, it felt like Olympia had pulled the rug out from under them.

IL26-001 seeks to undo that rewrite and re-enact the original law as it was before the 2025 changes. This isn’t about inventing something new—it’s about restoring what parents already won. That distinction matters. The initiative is more than a policy fight; it is a test of whether citizen power can override a legislature that reneged on an earlier agreement.

The second initiative, IL26-638, focuses on fairness in girls’ sports. It would require that students participating in female-only athletics be biologically female, verified through the same physical examination process that already exists for school athletics.. Supporters argue this protects opportunities for female athletes under Title IX’s original intent and prevents biological males from displacing girls in competition..

These two new initiatives, which will be before the legislature in 2026 if they can receive enough signatures, follow a proven track record of citizen-led reform. In 2024, three Let’s Go Washington initiatives—restoring police pursuits, enacting the original Parents’ Bill of Rights, and banning a state income tax—were adopted directly by the legislature. That same year, Let’s Go Washington collected enough signatures to allow Washington voters the option at the ballot box to repeal the state’s natural gas ban, which they did. Again and again, Washingtonians have spoken clearly, forcing Olympia to accept changes it resisted.

Polling shows why. Earlier this month, 70% of Washington voters said they do not support boys playing in girls’ sports. The disconnect couldn’t be clearer: Olympia is out of touch with the people it is supposed to represent.

Despite this, signature collectors for the initiatives have recently been subject to threats, harassment, and intimidation at numerous times and locations.

That is why these new initiatives matter so deeply. IL26-001 (strengthen communication between parents and schools) is not symbolic; it is the only way for citizens to reclaim rights the legislature took away. IL26-638 (protecting fairness in girls’ sports), in a different arena, represents the same principle: citizens stepping up where leaders refuse, ensuring fairness and integrity in girls’ athletics.

By signing and supporting these initiatives, Washingtonians can ensure government policy reflects the will of the large majority—not the preferences of a political class. Olympia must either pass these measures as written or send them back to voters for a final say. That is how democracy is supposed to work, and why the initiative process exists in the first place.

Let’s Go Washington is giving citizens the tools to make sure their voice is heard once again. If you believe parents deserve transparency and girls deserve fair competition, now is the time to act.
