Whatcom County Hosts First Government Open House September 3

On Wednesday, September 3rd (6:00–7:30 PM), Whatcom County is hosting its first County Government Open House at the County Courthouse on 311 Grand Ave., Suite 105, Bellingham, WA. This is more than a meet-and-greet, it’s an important opportunity to ask tough questions and demand accountability on the things affecting our community.

Here’s why it matters:

  • In December 2024, by a 4–3 vote, the Whatcom County Council approved a 2025-2026 biennial budget that increased the general fund by nearly $50 million from the 2024 adopted budget, that included a property tax increase that we are all paying now.

  • Taxpayer-funded programs continue to expand, yet many show little to no measurable outcomes or accountability.

  • Big projects like the new jail and behavioral health facility are moving forward slowly, while other priorities compete for limited dollars.

County leaders will showcase projects, review the current budget, and invite the public to “connect face-to-face.” But showing up only matters if citizens come prepared to press for answers.

Ask about the spending and tax increases. Ask about program outcomes. Ask what’s being done to ensure your tax dollars are used responsibly.

Here is a reminder of the 4-3 vote on this current budget (featured in the most recent Whatcom County Council Scorecard):

  • VOTED YES:  Barry Buchanan, Todd Donovan, Kaylee Galloway, and Jon Scanlon

  • VOTED NO: Tyler Byrd, Ben Elenbaas, and Mark Stremler

Don’t miss your opportunity to hold our elected officials accountable. I hope you can join Future 42 Whatcom on Wednesday evening in Bellingham.
